About Joni Watkins

Joni is a Registered NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioner providing services across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. She brings extensive experience supporting individuals experiencing complex behavioural, psychosocial and environmental challenges, with a strong focus on improving safety, wellbeing, autonomy and quality of life.

Joni’s practice is grounded in trauma-informed, recovery-oriented and person-centred approaches. She has extensive experience supporting individuals impacted by mental health challenges, trauma, domestic and family violence, and complex life circumstances. Through this work, she has developed strong skills in risk assessment, safety planning, behavioural formulation and multi-agency collaboration across health, housing, legal and community services.

As a Behaviour Support Practitioner, Joni takes a curious and collaborative approach to understanding behaviour. She looks beyond the behaviour itself to consider the person’s environment, communication, relationships, life experiences, strengths and unmet needs, with the aim of developing a meaningful understanding of what may be contributing to behaviours of concern.

Joni works closely with participants, families, carers and support teams to develop practical, person-centred behaviour support strategies that can be used in everyday environments. Her approach focuses on building skills, strengthening quality of life, increasing choice and autonomy, supporting safer and more positive environments, and reducing reliance on restrictive practices wherever possible. This builds on the existing profile’s emphasis on collaboration, safeguarding, strengths-based engagement and sustainable supports.

Joni’s counselling background also informs the way she works with participants and families. She brings a relational and compassionate approach to practice and understands the importance of listening to the person’s experience, recognising the impact of trauma and complex life circumstances, and ensuring supports are respectful, realistic and individually tailored.

Joni is a registered member of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and holds a Diploma of Counselling and Diploma of Community Services. She has undertaken extensive professional development across risk assessment, safeguarding, trauma-informed practice, complex case management, suicide prevention, mental health, domestic and family violence response and behavioural practice.

Her work is informed by recognised frameworks including Positive Behaviour Support, trauma-informed practice, strengths-based planning, recovery-oriented practice and the Safe & Together Model.
